RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION (RFID)
The AAFA understands the urgency and critical nature for its members to be up to speed on all aspects of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Technology. We also understand the necessity of developing a global set of standards that can be used by the entire supply chain to control and reduce costs, increase efficiency in the transport and location of goods, increase flow and utilization of data, and improve the overall communication with your trading partners.
We hope you find this site a useful resource to learn about this rapidly evolving technology and how it will effect changes to the apparel and footwear industry supply chain.

RFID Skeptics Embrace RFID, RFID Journal
A lot of people are still skeptical about radio frequency identification technology. At the RFID Journal - AAFA Apparel & Footwear Summit, some said they were curious to learn what's going on in their industry, but that they didn't believe RFID would work well enough to deliver benefits for their company. Others came away believing the investment wasn't worth the time and effort, because their supply chains were already very efficient, but still wanted to hear about other companies' experiences.

DOD Finalizes RFID Mandate Language, RFID Journal, September 19, 2005
The Department of Defense has finalized the contract clause mandating select suppliers to tag certain shipments headed for two DOD supply depots.
RFID IMPLEMENTATION DATE IS RECONFIRMED
The DoD policy requiring RFID implementation has a starting date of January 2005. This date has not changed. The effective date for suppliers to implement RFID will be the date a supplier’s contract contains language regarding the requirement. That could be any date in January 2005 or beyond. The DoD has many contracts with its suppliers that are renewed and recompeted regularly. As these new contracts are effective the requirement for RFID will be included according to the supplier implementation plan (www.dodrfid.org). For additional information please visit the DoD RFID website www.dodrfid.org or contact AAFA's Kurt Courtney at 703.797.9039. (Posted November 22, 2004)
The RFID Journal reported the release of the Department of Defense's (DoD) final RFID Policy, which will be incorporated into the next update of the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation, the Defense Transportation Regulation and the Military Standard 129. Military Standard 129 outlines the standard the military uses to label goods. As previously stated from the memo released on July 30 from the DoD, suppliers of Class I, II (Clothing, Individual Equipment), VI and IX shipping to San Joaquin, CA (DDJC) and Susquehanna, PA (DDSP) will require tagging of individual cases, cases packaged with palletized unit loads and all palletized unit loads commencing on January 1, 2005. Contracts issued as of October 1, 2004 for delivery on or after January 1, 2005 will require RFID compliance. For more information, please go to the DoD RFID website or contact AAFA's Kurt Courtney at 703.797.9039.
