Minimum Wage

The Issue:
On May 25th, President Bush signed into law a new version of the Iraq War Supplemental that included a provision to increase the minimum wage over the next three years.  The minimum wage had not been raised for the past 10 years and played a popular role as part of the Democrats’ 100 hour push earlier this year.  The 1st phase of the three-phase minimum wage increase, raising the minimum wage from $5.15/hour to $5.85/hour, was enacted on July 24, 2007.  Under the new law, the minimum wage will eventually increase to $7.25/hour by July 24, 2009.

AAFA on the Issue:
AAFA has taken no position on the minimum wage issue but would like to ensure it applies fairly to all Americans, including those employed by Federal Prisons Industries.
